The seaside village of Acicastello is about 10 km away from Catania. It marks the beginning of the “Riviera del Ciclopi“, known in this way because, according to Greek mythology, this area was inhabited by the Cyclops. At the highest point of the lava cliff, there is the castle which was built by the Normans in the 11th century. Inside there is a small botanical garden and the civic museum of Acicastello exhibiting a precious archaeological, mineralogical and paleontological collection.
Approximately 2 km away from Acicastello you can admire the Lachea Island and the” Faraglioni of Acitrezza, picturesque islets known as “Cyclops islands” because they represent the boulders thrown by Polifemo against Ulysses ‘s ship.
